Amongst all Venice’s theatres, the most famous is definitely the Gran Teatro della Fenice, which has been destroyed by fire and rebuilt many times in its history. It was opened in 1796 and in the nineteenth century it became the setting for many operas by great Italian composers like Gioachino Rossini, Vincenzo Bellini and Giuseppe Verdi, who premiered (amongst other works) La Traviata in 1853. Opera and theatre lovers will also find Teatro Malibran and Teatro Goldoni and a wide range of important performances, together with modern and experimental theatre at Teatro Fondamenta Nuove, a small centre of creativity and wonder where you can discover new talents on the international theatre scene.
