The museums of Florence offer the most complete overview of Gothic, Renaissance and post-Renaissance art in Italy, thanks to structures that preserve priceless masterpieces and that attract millions of tourists each year. The most important and most visited museum is the Uffizi Gallery, itself part of the marvellous architecture and art of Piazza della Signoria.
The Uffizi Gallery, created on a design by Giorgio Vasari, houses a superb collection of artworks, including the largest collection of paintings by Botticelli, divided in various rooms, which offers a display organised by schools and styles in chronological order. The original architecture of Varsari’s corridor is closely linked to the Uffizi. This is a raised walkway that connects Palazzo Vecchio with Palazzo Pitti, passing through the Galleria degli Uffizi and over the Ponte Vecchio.
Other important museums include the Gallery of the Academy, inside which are works by Prigioni and Michelangelo’s David, as well as a marvellous collection of Renaissance artworks. There are the Bargello National Museum and the Medici Chapels, near the Church of San Lorenzo, characterised by extremely important architectural spaces.
